Course content |
Readings and interpretations mainly of three books: Dodds, Greek and Irational; Nussbaum, Fragility of the Good; Williams, Shame and Necessity. This books will be read as a continual progression of thinking in one euro-american tradition. Reading those books will include interpretations of many other texts, especially from the archaic and classic Greece: ancient Greek tragedy, philosophy etc.

Learning outcomes |
In the course we will be concerned with archaic and classic ancient Greek understanding of man, his agency and thought. The course will focus on the explanation or interpretation of this issue in the work of E. R. Dodds, Dodds´s student B. Williams and Williams´s learner M. Nussbaum. The duration of the course is two semesters.
Students will be able to explain precisely contemporary thought trends and their place in society, science, and academic surroundings, and to deal with the basic terminology of these trends. They will also learn to read and analyze a philosophical (i.e. abstract) text, to discuss it in a group, and to reflect on home reading. Critical thinking will be developed by writing. Students will know history of the ancient Greece, especially in terms of the history of literature. Students will be able to orientate oneself in matters of necessity, fate and chance (moira, tuché). |
