Philosophy of politics, its history as an integral part of the history of philosophy: delimitation of its main problems by the europaen and american tradition of the moral and political philosophy; the basic notions, the difference between "policy" and "politcs", notions like "natural", "good life", "discussion in the public space" etc.; the ancient, mediaeval and early renaissance political thought.

The history of philosophy as a history of political thought I. Introduction - some basic problems. Plato: the basic question of good life as determined by trhe relation of the citizen to the City. See Plato´s Republic, Laws and dialogues. The difference between the the conception of the ancien Greece as civilised in contrast to the co called barbarians. The exceptionality of the Athrn´s democracy: see the discours of Pericles above the Athenians dead in the battle. Aristotle and his conception of the same basic question, his systematic description of the different forms of state. The "care of himself" in the late ancient world, the transition of the citizen of the closed City to the individual, the citizen of the Roman empire. Augustin and the Civitas dei. The dispute between papal and emperor aspirations, the idea of the universal monarchy: Dante Alighieri. Machiavelli and the birth of politics as an accomplishement of the strife for power.
Students will get proper knowledge of the history of philosophy with regard to political thought from ancient times to Renaissance. |

Discussion
The regularly personal presence at lectures as well the independent study of all recommended materials is considered as obvious. All students are expected to produce one essay upon a subject of political philosophy, chosen after the consultation with the lecturer. |
