Course content
Mediaeval conception [philosophy] as revealed by the struggle between the Church and the state [emperor]. The notion of the "universal monarchy" as opposed to the "national" state: the birth of the renaissance political thought.

Learning outcomes
The history of philosophy as a history of political thought II The modern history of political thought: the birth of modern theory of society and state. The conception of the natural law as a base for the enlightement conception of the toleration, the individual and the raison d´état. The question of the "contrat social", its double following in the concepts of legitimacy and sovereignty (cf. Hobbes, Rousseau). The path to the representative democracy and to the declaration of civil rights (The Glorious revolution, the American revolution, the French revolution). The great thinkers of this developement: Hobbes Locke Montesquieu Rousseau
The students will get a thorough acquaintance with the substance and problems of the modern history of philosophy and political thought.

Discussion

To be present to the lectures, the independent study of the recommended literature, one essay upon a subject of the mediaeval political thought.
