Course content
Syllabus: 1) Summary of the early and medieval Christianity: Sacramental theologies, diversity of churches 2) Eastern Ortodoxy: An Overview 3) Czech Reformation, its background and outcomes 4) Background of the German Reformation; Martin Luther 5) German and Swiss Reformation; Religious conflicts in the 16th century 6) The world impact of the Reformation; Reformation in other countries (England; Colonization of the North America) 7) Catholic Counter-Reformation; Religious coexistence and Conflict in the Modern Period 8) Enlightenment, Rationalism and Christian reactions 9) The Catholic Church and State in the 19th century (Decrease of the Catholic Church's political power) 10) Politicial systems of the 20th century (Democracies, authoritarian regimes) and Christian churches' relations to them 11) Global diversity of the present time Christianity (Christianity across the continents, Evangelicalism and Pentecostalism, Formation of new churches and movements) 12) Christianity and the global topics of the 21th century (International conflicts and tensions, evironmental topics, cultural topic in the West and other parts of the world)

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on the history of Christianity in the Modern Period and the present time with a view to the politico-cultural development of the West. Its objective is to introduce the changes in Christian thought and Church organizations in the context of the abovementioned politico-cultural development.
Students will gain the understanding of the development of Christianity in the Modern Period and the present time in the context of broader politico-cultural changes.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Attendance at lectures and seminars is obligatory (min. 80%). The examination will be verifying of knowledge of subjects discussed in lectures and seminars and a basic orientation in the topics of the recommended literature.
