The doctoral study is completed by a Final state exam consisting of a (successful) public dissertation defence, for which the doctoral student can enrol after fulfilling all the abovementioned obligations. Full-time students submit their application for PhD defence so that it can take place by the end of the 4th year of study. In exceptional cases, full-time students can be allowed by the Programme Board to continue in the study in the 5th year of study, if they have presented a clear, detailed, and realistic plan for the completion of the study and defence during the 5th year of study. The Board takes into account, for instance, the extent of the unfinished part of the dissertation (that it does not exceed realistic prospects of completion within the year, i.e., not more than one chapter). Part-time students submit their application for defence so that it can take place by the end of the 5th year of study.
