Výstupy z učení
Course description The aim of the course is to provide an overview of the main contemporary (from 20th century on) ethical theories in the Anglophone philosophical area, complemented by the major representatives of ethics in the Continental tradition. These traditions will be studied separately in a parallel manner, each will include a seminar part in which students will read and discuss primary texts relevant to the topics. Continental ethics: The course will introduce the student to the main traditions within continental ethics of the 20th century, including phenomenology, existentialism, feminism, postcolonialism and post-structuralism. We will investigate how these theoretical frameworks have influenced philosophical research on current ethical issues concerning the medicalization of the human and body, the status of the other, racism and colonialism, artificial intelligence and digitalization, our relationship to the environment, and many others. The course consists of introductory lectures on the main traditions, and classroom discussion, starting from the reading of a selection of primary texts relevant to the topics of the lecture part. Analytic Ethics This course provides an introduction to major schools of thought in ethics and metaethics. We begin by examining competing theories of moral action and goodness, such as utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics. We explore how these theories inform questions in care ethics and feminist ethics. In the second half, we shift to a second-order perspective and focus on key positions in metaethics. We will consider arguments for and against moral realism, moral noncognitivism, moral error theory, and moral particularism. After exploring recent genealogical arguments against moral knowledge, we will also think about the difference between moral and political normativity.
