This course provides an introduction to epistemology, a central area of philosophy concerned with the nature of epistemic standings like knowledge, justification, and understanding. We will examine several core questions in the field: What is knowledge? When are beliefs justified? Is knowledge even possible? What is the relation between knowledge and reliability? What role(s) do intellectual virtues play in our epistemic lives? What does it mean to understand something? What makes perception and testimony sources of knowledge? When and why is it wrong to disbelieve someone who shares their knowledge? In answering these questions, we will dig deeper into some of the main debates and schools of thought in contemporary epistemology. While no prior coursework in epistemology is required, students are expected to have some background in philosophy and familiarity with philosophical methods of inquiry.
