The course's aim is to discuss the relations between the categories of myth and propaganda in the political and public sphere, both in history and present time. The course's main argument says that despite the virtually omnipresent political dimension of myths (at least an implicit one), potential propagandistic aspect of a mythical narrative needs to be examined individually, with respect not only to the narrative structure, but also the identity and social role of the narrator and the audience. Not every politically relevant narrative can be correctly labelled as propaganda. Classical semiotic approaches to the category of myth are used as the main theoretical framework of the course. The outcome of the course consists of a short essay (6-10 standard pages) in English, optimally a short case study on an original source material, followed by an oral discussion about its content.
