Course content
|
Structure of living matter, the cell and its components, the generational cycle, the influence of ionizing radiation on the nucleus and cell organelles. Electromagnetic radiation, types and properties of ionizing radiation. Interaction of ionizing radiation with matter, chemical and biochemical changes after irradiation. Genotoxicity of ionizing radiation - chromosomal changes after irradiation, the emergence of mutations. Stochastic and deterministic effects of ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation sources (sources used in medicine for diagnosis and therapy). Nuclear medicine, gamma camera. Tomography, positron emission tomography, magnetic resonance imaging. Radiotherapy, radiosensitivity, radiorezistence. Radionuclides, internal and external contamination, decontamination. Acute radiation sickness, diagnosis and treatment. Skin damage (after total body and local irradiation). Acute and chronic changes in the digestive and respiratory tracts. Acute and chronic changes in the CNS and the musculoskeletal system. Acute and chronic changes in kidneys, the urinary tract, gonads and endocrine glands. Ionizing radiation and its detection and identification of radionuclides according to the spectrum (Exploranium GR-135). Seminar - radiation accidents (measures and treatment). Seminar - radiation physics, device used in diagnosis and therapy. Seminar - radiosensitivity of tissues and organs.

The aim of the course is to teach students the characteristics of various types of ionizing radiation and its biological effects on living organisms at the cellular and organ level.

Completion of compulsory 80% attendance at the practicum sessions and seminars. Successful completion of a written test. Successful completion of an oral examination.
