Course content
Branched-chain amino acids, glutamine, nitrogen donors, fatty acids. Intensive metabolic care, metabolic phases in a critical condition. The intestine and the intestinal barrier in a critical condition. The intestine as an immune organ. Complication: undernutrition in critically ill patients. Indications for individual dietological care, food preparation using special technology. Drinking regimen, mineral water. Tumour cachexia, anorexia, and appetite stimulation in the oncological patient. Influence of medication on the nutritional status. Prebiotics, probiotics. Fibre. Nutritional anticarcinogens. Metabolic syndrome X, co-morbidities related to insulin resistance. Food refusal related to disorders of mental functions and its consequences. Determination of nutritional status ? on yourself. Nutritional history, energy consumption. Risk assessment. Intervention of a nutritional therapist, nutritional procedures. Decision algorithms in artificial nutrition. Case reports of the Department of Internal Medicine. Catering operation of the hospital, food ordering systems. Computer in clinical nutrition. Use of food database programs. Solutions in artificial parenteral nutrition and their composition. Preparations for enteral nutrition. Technique of artificial nutrition. Complications of artificial nutrition. Specifics of home care. Specifics of nursing care in patients with impaired acid-base balance, water and mineral farming. Special technological procedures and individualization of diets.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with intensive metabolic care of patients in a critical condition, with the technique of artificial nutrition administration in a hospital and a home environment, in intensive care units as well as on standard wards.
The student knows individual artificial nutrition preparations, indications for individual dietetic procedures in patients, is able to determine the patient's nutritional status, knows the technique of artificial nutrition administration, and knows the specifics of home care.

Didactic test

Fulfillment of mandatory attendance at lectures and exercises. Completion of a written test or oral examination at the discretion of the course guarantor.
