Course content
Epidemiology, pathophysiology, and classification of wounds, factors affecting the development and healing of chronic wounds and defects. Wound diagnostics, assessment scales. Treatment and care of chronic wounds, management of the wound bed. Supporting healing. Dressing materials and their selection. Surgical intervention for the treatment of the diabetic foot: lower limb arterial angioplasty, revascularization of the diabetic foot, amputation procedures. Prosthetic care options. Management of wound healing. Advisory activities and services in the field of wound healing. Legal responsibilities in the care of chronic wounds. Case studies. Practice: caring for patients with various types of chronic wounds in clinical conditions (physical assessment, wound classification, using assessment scales, wound documentation, dressing changes, and selecting appropriate dressings). The nursing process: patients with a chronic wound. Education and advisory activities.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the subject is to prepare students to care for patients with chronic defects.
The student knows the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnostics, and treatment of chronic wounds. The student knows the standardized procedures and supplies aimed at the prevention and treatment of wounds, including management and legal responsibilities in the care of chronic wounds. The student is able to evaluate factors affecting the progression of wound healing, assess the condition of the wound, select suitable dressings, plan care, monitor and document the progression of the chronic wound, educate patients and their families. The student is able to justify the used procedures and defend them in a professional and lay discussion.

Oral examination, Student performance assessment

Fulfillment of mandatory attendance at lectures, exercises and seminars. Passing a written test. Successful completion of the practical and oral exam.
