Course content
Gerontology, geriatrics, aging, ontogenesis theory. Involutional changes in old age. Psyche of an old man and social aspects of aging. Peculiarities of diseases in old age. Special features of pharmacology in old age. Comprehensive geriatric assessment functions. Multicausal geriatric syndromes. Immobilization syndrome. Dementia and mild cognitive impairment in the elderly. Specifics of nutrition in old age. Health and social facilities for seniors. Specifics of care at the geriatric department. Evaluation and measurement scales used in geriatrics. Communicating with seniors. Non-pharmacological approaches for seniors with memory disorders. Education of seniors in health and social care. The quality of seniors´ lives.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to highlight the peculiarities of diseases in old age, both in general terms and in specific groups of diseases. Within the complexity the course includes social issues in old age, which plays an important role in the planning of health and social care and services.
The student knows characteristic changes associated with aging, is familiar with the problems of the senior´s psyche and pharmacological specificity. The student knows the symptoms of immobilization syndrome and understands the social aspects of aging.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

The fulfilment of compulsory 50% attendance at lectures. The fulfilment of compulsory 80 % active participation at seminars. Completion of an oral examination.
