Course content
|
General oncology - carcinogenesis, characteristics of tumour growth, tumour nomenclature. Overview of risk factors for tumour development, principles of primary prevention and early detection of malignant tumours, modern screening and diagnostic methods. Fundamental treatment methods in oncology - surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, biological response modificators, bone marrow transplantation. Complications of antitumour treatment, methods of nursing care of patients with neuropathies, impaired skin integrity, myelosuppression, and organ disorders. Complications of progression of a tumour illness and their treatment. Evaluation of quality of life of oncological patients, causes and risk factors for the development of complications, their diagnostics and evaluation. Statistical methods in oncology. Sources of ionizing radiation in radiotherapy. Protection against the effects of ionizing radiation. Safety requirements for work with cytostatics.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of palliative care is to manage symptoms of an incurable illness, to maintain the best possible quality of life, and to reduce limitations brought on by the illness. The study graduate participates in the care of patients and collaborates with their families.
The student manages communication with the patient and psychosocial and spiritual care, knows oncological documentation, knows risk factors for the development of oncological illnesses, knows the principles of oncological treatment including safety requirements for work with cytostatics, knows treatment of pain, knows undesired effects of oncological therapy, anatomical and functional consequences of care of oncological patients, knows basic TNM classification of tumours, knows basic nursing care of the oncological patient, and coordination of patient care.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral examination
Completion of compulsory 50% attendance at the lectures. Completion of compulsory 80% attendance at the practicum sessions and seminars. Successful completion of an oral examination.
