Course content
The internal building of the metals and alloys, foundation of the thermodynamics and kinetics of phases transformations. Phase equilibrium, phase diagrams, phase system transformations, iron - carbon systems. Phase transformations in solid state, theoretical bases of the heat treatment. Heat-treatment principles and technologies of the steels and cast irons. The bases constructional materials, the quality grades and material classification. Cast irons, zoning, characteristic and applicaton. Deformation and fractura behaviour of the materials. Mechanical testing of the materials. Evaluation methods of the microstructure and phase transformations. Non-ferrous irons and their alloys. Plastics and composites.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming)
Learning outcomes
The aim of the subject is to inform students about properties and service behaviour of the selected groups of the materials, which are applied mainly for vehicular transport means. To give global information about their treatment and using, each degradation mechanisms as a direct consequence of the processing technology and operation loading regime.
After course students have knowledge about materials range and have ability to design material for selected application. In connecting to strength analyses students know rules for dimension analyses, in according to loading parameters and operational conditions.
Prerequisites
Required is the fundamental knowledge mechanics - statics, on the general physics level.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Written examination

The requirements will be defined by lecturer
