Course content

1. Chemical bond and band model of amorphous and crystalline materials. 2. Interaction of electromagnetic radiation with solid. 3. Preparation of inorganic bulk materials: Glassy, glass-ceramic and crystalline materials for optics. 4. Preparation of thin films and low-dimensional materials for optics. 5. Phosphors I: Luminescence, materials doped with rare-earth and transition-metal ions, III-V and II-VI semiconductors. 6. Phosphors II: Optical amplifiers, LEDs, Principle of the LASER, photon upconversion and dowconversion. 7. Amorphous materials in optics I: Oxide, chalcogenide and halide glasses and their applications. 8. Amorphous materials in optics II: Optical fibers and thin films. 9. Nanomaterials: Preparation, properties and applications. 10. Optical sensors and detectors. 11. Optical materials and reflectance: Optical memories, antireflection coatings, optical filters. 12. Optical materials and diffraction/scattering: Transparent polycrystalline ceramics, glass-ceramics, photonic crystals, holograms. 13. Materials in selected optical applications: Nonlinear optics, metamaterials, displays, transparent conductive oxides.
