Course content

Materials classification. Chemical bonds in solids. Microstructure and crystal structure of solids. Real structure of solids, defects. Mechanical and physical properties of materials. Phase diagrams and their applications. Metals and alloys, iron, steel. Polymers, their classification and characterization. Glass, types of glasses, glass production and processing. Traditional and advanced ceramics.

Learning outcomes
|
Students get information on basic categories of materials. The subjects are materials structure, glass, ceramics, metals, polymers, semiconductors and nanomaterials.
Students get basic orientation on various materials and their basic character and applications.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Written examination
Oral examination. Two written tests with 20 questions. Writing a report on a special topics from metallic materials.
