Course content
|
Introduction to Medical Microbiology. Morphology of microorganisms, taxonomy, metabolism. Microscopic technique, material collection. Microflora of the human body, microbe-host relationships. Epidemiology, statistical methods, processes of disease spread. Principles of combating infectious diseases, antibiotics and chemotherapy. Immunity, disease of the immune system. Serological investigation methods. Respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. Anthropozoonosis, venereal diseases. Healthcare-associated infections - distribution, causative agents. Healthcare-associated infections - preventive and control measures. Decontamination procedures in healthcare. Medical mycology. Living and working environment, air, water hygiene. Nutritional hygiene, balanced composition of food, energy value of food, foreign substances. Hygiene of medical facilities, personal protective equipment, handling of food, laundry, waste, prevention of infections associated with health care. Material collection and basic types of dyeing. Microscopic technique, nutrient media and solutions. Serological investigation methods. Personal protective tools. Interpretation of laboratory findings.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to get students acquainted with causal agents of human infectious diseases, possibilities of transmission and spread of infectious agents to susceptible hosts, to explain the role and function of human immune system and to provide basic information in the field of hygiene.
Students understand the context of the emergence and spread of infectious diseases, they can choose appropriate epidemiological measures leading to controlling the development of these diseases and appropriate patient procedures (prevention of healthcare associated infections). They know the right principles of collection and transportation of biological material. They are well versed in issues of prevention and healthy lifestyle, nutrition hygiene, work and environment and hygiene of medical facilities.

|
Oral examination, Didactic test
Completion of mandatory 80% participation in seminars. Completion of a written test or oral examination according to the course guarantor's decision.
