Course content
|
Psychosocial skills of a specialist and team communication. Supportive techniques in communication with problematic and aggressive patients in perioperative care. Communication with disadvantaged patients and patients of other ethnic groups in perioperative care. Problems of mistreated and abused people, domestic violence. Ethical approach towards patients and their relatives with regards to age and nature of the illness. Ethics in perioperative care. Effective management of excessive mental strain and prevention of a burnout syndrome. Prevention of risks of excessive mental strain. Supportive techniques for coping with work mental strain, interpersonal aggression. Relationships in stressful situations. Mental hygiene of a health worker and mental health care. The role of peer support. Improving the quality of communication skills. Supporting professional competencies. Supervision and reflection of one's own work. Factors affecting the quality of life.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to make students acquainted with psychological and ethical issues of specialized perioperative care, as well as with basic communication skills in different age categories, aggressive patients, patients of other ethnic groups, handicapped clients and with the issue of helping professions, including psychic hygiene.
Students manage the right communication with clients and their families during the perioperative care. Students are familiar with the basics of psychic hygiene and they effectively manage stressful situations.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Written examination
Completion of compulsory attendance at the lectures (60 %) and practicum sessions (80 %). Successful defense of a homework.
