Course content
Basic terms, epidemiology, demography, global ageing, health policy. Concept of active ageing, Active Ageing WHO. Geriatric symptomatology, changes in the human organism in old age. Comprehensive geriatric assessment, ancillary examinations to assess functional status, assessment of self-sufficiency, care needs. Special features of pharmacotherapy in old age. Medications inappropriate in old age, Beers criteria. Compliance of the elderly, polypragmasia. The most common problems in geriatric prescribing. Musculoskeletal system in old age, immobility, instability, incontinence, immobilization syndrome. Disorders of skin integrity. Falls, prescriptive cascade. Over treatment. Mental disorders in old age - depression, delirium. Intellectual disorders, neurological and psychiatric issues in old age. Organisation of services and care, quality of services, ethical issues in elderly care. Palliative care in geriatrics. Social and legal issues of the elderly, mistreatment of the elderly, issues of abuse, neglect and exploitation of the elderly, maladaptation syndrome. Gerontological history, life history of a patient and its application into communication with a patient, with a family member. Reminiscence. Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment - CGA. Assessment of nutritional status in geriatrics. Standing and walking assessment in geriatrics. Assessment of self-sufficiency and performance. Assessment of psychological functions in geriatrics. Cognitive training. Sociological analysis of institutional life, of the natural environment, quality of life questionnaires, evaluation.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to prepare students for specific care of patients at the geriatric workplace in terms of theory and practical in diagnostics, symptomatology and therapy in old age. Attention is also paid to the management of care for the elderly and the sick, with an emphasis on the quality of care.
The student understands the changes in the organism caused by the aging process, orients himself in a number of diagnostic tools and scales that help in the evaluation and care of the elderly. The student also knows the principles of communication with a geriatric patient, has an overview of care in the region and can solve individual complications and health problems accompanying the care and treatment of a senior.

Fulfillment of the mandatory participation in lectures and participation in seminars. Fulfillment and presentation of the assigned written work. Passing the oral exam.
