Course content
Definition of communication, theory of communication. Verbal communication. Nonverbal communication. Communication barriers, principles of effective communication, specifics of communication in health. Assertiveness, refusal, negotiation. Conflicts and their resolution, constructive criticism. Active listening, empathy, recognition. Interpersonal communication failures, specifics of communication with types of troubles individuals. Specifics of communication with individuals at different stages of development. Specifics of communication with individuals with various types of disability. Specifics of intercultural communication. Specifics of communication with seriously ill, dying, bereaved. Introduction, self-presentation, presentation. Dialogue - model situations, role play. Nonverbal communication, specifics in health care. Assertiveness techniques training. Conflict resolution, constructive criticism training, accepting criticism. Active listening, empathy, recognition - model situation, role play Communication with aggressive individuals and with individuals manifesting psychiatric syndromes. Communication with children and the elderly, resources to facilitate communication. Specifics of communication with mentally and physically challenged people and with people with sensory impairment - experiential workshop. Communication with foreigners. The communication of truth, communication with seriously ill.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Skills training, Stimulating activities (simulation, games, drama)
Learning outcomes
The aim of the subject is to provide basic information about the essence of interpersonal communication with focus on health care.
Students will acquire knowledge on types and ways of communications. Students will be capable of distinguishing effective and non-effective communication, and identify communication barriers. Students will learn basic communication skills, which they will be capable of applying in practice.
