Course content
Basal stimulation (history and present, theoretical background, goals, use, basic elements). Superstructural elements of the concept (optical and auditory stimulation). Initial touch - experience seminar. Autobiographical history. Somatic stimulation (baths, positioning, micro-positioning). Techniques to promote breathing. Tactile-haptic stimulation. Vibratory and vestibular stimulation. Olfactory and oral stimulation. Snoezelen, multisensory environment - experiential seminar. Techniques used with people with dementia - reminiscence, biographical model of care, validation, sensory activation. Communication with patients with dementia. Working with biography, life story.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the concept of basal stimulation and other models that can be used when working with clients with perceptual impairment, such as: patients with different types of disabilities, dementia, unconsciousness, etc. Students go through experiential activities and try to create a biography - a life story of a selected elderly person.
Students learn about techniques that use maximum appeal to all senses (basal stimulation, snoezelen and sensory activation), recall techniques to support cognitive functions and specifics of communication with patients suffering from dementia.

Specified compulsory attendance in seminars. Passing a written test or an oral exam, or other conditions, as decided by the course guarantor. Completing given assignment.
