Course content
|
Introduction to medical microbiology. Morphology of micro-organisms, taxonomy, metabolism. Microscopic techniques, collection of materials. Microflora in the human body, relationships between microbes and their hosts. Epidemiology, statistical methods, processes involved in the spread of infections. Principles of the fight against infectious diseases, antibiotics, and chemotherapeutics. Immunity, diseases of the immune system. Serological examination methods. Respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. Anthropozoonoses, venereal infections. Nosocomial infections. Medical mycology. Preventive medicine, public health care, health promotion programs, determinants of health, quality of life. Lifestyle; healthy nutrition; physical activity; psychological stress; drug, medication, and alcohol dependency. The environment and occupational environment, air, water hygiene. Nutritional hygiene, balanced nutrition, energetic value of nutrition, foreign substances. Hygiene in health care institutions; personal protective aids; food, laundry, and waste manipulation; prevention of nosocomial and professional infections.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with causative agents of human, their diagnosis, infectious diseases and possibilities of transmission and spread of an infectious agent to a susceptible host, to explain the role and function of the human immune system, and to present basic information from the field of hygiene.
The student understands the relationship between the origins and spread of infectious diseases, is able to select appropriate epidemiological precautions leading to a suppression of the development of these diseases and the appropriate approach to patient care. He/she knows correct principles of collection and transport of biological materials. He/she orientates himself/herself in issues concerning illness prevention and healthy lifestyle, nutritional, occupational, and environmental hygiene, and hygiene in health care institutions.

Completion of compulsory attendance at the lectures and practicum sessions. Completion of a written test or oral examination according to the course guarantor's decision.
