Course content
Introduction to the field of pathology, work in the pathology and anatomy department, principles of work with biopsy material. Disease causes, prevention, and etiopathogeneses. Regressive and metabolic changes, inflammation, necrosis, gangrene, and atrophy. Inflammation. Inflammation. General manifestation of inflammation. Nonspecific and specific inflammation. Progressive changes, regeneration, reparation, hypertrophy, hyperplasia, dysplasia, and transplantation. Pathology of the cardiovascular system. Diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Diseases of the endocardium, myocardium, and pericardium. Valve defects. Ischaemic heart disease and its forms. Hypertension and its manifestation. Pathology of the pulmonary circulation. Local and general manifestation of disorders of the cardiovascular system. Pathology of the respiratory system. The nose, paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx. The larynx and trachea. The lungs. The pleura. Pathology of the kidneys and urinary tract. Pathology of the nervous system. Ischaemic changes in the CNS, intracranial bleeding, brain oedema, inflammation, and tumours. Pathology of the female and male reproductive systems. Pathology of the mammary gland. Demonstration: standard clinical autopsy. Pathological oncology. Tumour oncogenesis. Classification of tumours, basic types of tumours. Pathology of the digestive system. The oral cavity, teeth, salivary glands, pharynx, tonsils, and stomach. Pathology of the digestive system. The small and large intestine. The peritoneum. Pathology of the digestive system. The liver, biliary tract, and pancreas.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the subject is to provide students with basic information on the causes and development of diseases, to explain their morphological manifestations at different levels of the organism, and to acquaint students with the basic investigative methods in pathology.
The student understands ethiopathogenesis of illnesses and recognizes disorders and changes at the cellular, tissue, organ, and organism levels. He/she knows basic methods used in pathology and principles of collection and transport of biological material for an examination.

Oral examination

Completion of compulsory 50% attendance at the practicum sessions and 100% at seminars.
