Course content
|
The subject of pharmacology, basic concepts. Basics of pharmacokinetics. Fundamentals of pharmacodynamics. What precedes the introduction of medicines into clinical practice, ethics of testing medicines. Overview of medicines affecting the autonomic nervous system. Overview of medicines affecting the central nervous system. Pain and options to manage it pharmacologically. Medicines affecting the heart and blood vessels. Medicines used for diseases of the respiratory system, gastrointestinal system medicines. Medicines used for kidney diseases. Overview of antibiotics and chemotherapy. Overview of cytostatic agents. Disinfectants and antiseptics. Addiction to medicines, substance dependence. Basics of toxicology. Types of chemicals, exposure, selective intoxication. Relation dose - response, threshold dose, synergism. Absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of toxic substances. Types of organism´s response to a toxic substance. Toxicology of plant and animal toxins. Analytical Toxicology. Forensic toxicology. Medicinal and substance intoxication, treatment options, assignment presentations.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basics of general pharmacology, special pharmacology and toxicology of drugs and important chemicals relevant for practical use and application in other subjects. Lectures include issues of effects of drugs on human organism, fundamentals of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs, selected chapters comprising most important drugs.
Students will be acquainted with main groups of pharmaceuticals, risks and side effects of most frequently prescribed drugs. Students will learn basics of toxicology of significant noxious substances, and their impact on human organism.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Didactic test
Compulsory attendance of 80 per cent in lectures. To prepare and deliver a computer-based presentation on a set topic concerning treatment after a drug overdose or after a contact with a noxious substance.
