Course content
Psychology of health and illness. Psychological issues in the healthcare environment. Quality of life. Personality of a healthcare professional, specifics of helping professions, social role of the general nurse, personal development, supervision. Person-centred and relationship-building models and approaches. Empathy, congruence, active listening, crisis intervention.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge in the fields of health psychology, illness, and psychosomatic medicine, and to develop soft skills essential for the profession of a midwife.
The student understands the relationship between mental health in wellness and illness, and recognizes the importance of a life story in care. They are aware of the impact of the healthcare environment on both the female patient and the healthcare professional, and are able to mitigate its negative effects. They comprehend and apply the principles of an individualized approach to both ill and healthy women and their families. They master the basics of empathetic communication and self-reflection.

80 % compulsory attendance in seminars. Successful completion of the written coursework assignment.
