Course content
Introduction to pharmacology and fundamentals of pharmacokinetics. Fundamentals of pharmacodynamics, the relationship between a dose and an effect; medication administration methods. Clinical classification of medicament effects, indication, contraindication, interaction. What precedes introduction of a medicament into clinical practice, ethics in clinical trials of medicines. Drug addiction. Overview of pharmacology of the vegetative nervous system. Overview of medicaments affecting motor and sensory nerves. Introduction to pharmacology of the central nervous system, psychopharmaceuticals. Medicaments for illnesses of respiratory pathways. Overview of medicaments for the cardiovascular system. Overview of medicaments for the digestive system and for disorders of food intake. Kidney pharmacology. Overview of anti-tumour treatments. Female and male sexual hormones. Overview of anti-infectious medicaments. Addictive substances. An overview of the current antidotes medicine. Biological therapy.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with fundamentals of pharmacology and efficient pharmacotherapy so that they could use gained knowledge in their own practice.
The student has knowledge of basic indicative groups of medicaments, knows the most frequently prescribed medicinal preparations, their side effects, and undesired effects on the human organism. He/she understands and is able to explain fundamentals of pharmacokinetics. He/she orientates himself/herself in ethical issues concerning clinical trials of medicines.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Didactic test

Completion of compulsory 80% attendance at the lectures, seminars ang practicum sessions. Successful completion of an oral examination.
