Course content
Introduction to palliative care and treatment of pain. Basic principles of multiprofessional and interdisciplinary approach to the patient in palliative care. The concept of total pain and suffering. Monitoring of pain and other sources of the patient's suffering. Physiological basis of pain transmission and perception. Fundamentals of pharmacology of non-opioid analgesics. Fundamentals of pharmacology of opioids. Fundamentals of pharmacology of secondary analgesic drugs. Fundamentals of the issue of abuse of analgesic drugs. Local anaesthetics and their use for pain treatment. Intraspinal analgesia: the techniques. Other invasive methods of oncological pain control. Non-pharmacological procedures to control oncological pain. Non-invasive methods of analgesia administration. Algesiological examination of the patient with oncological pain. The foundations of therapeutic strategies for patients suffering from oncological pain. Painful conditions that are difficult to control. Managing episodic pain: special features. Special features of acute conditions in palliative care. The issue of intestinal obstruction. The issue of acute dyspnea. The issue of agitated delirium. Pathological fractures and sudden neurological disability. The issue of refractory symptoms, analgo-sedation. The issue of the decision-making process in palliative care. Acute and chronic pain (manifestation, pain behaviour); experiential seminar. Chronic pain - oncologic vs. non-oncologic - differences in perception. Assessment of pain (scales, tests, tables, psychological assessment, etc.). Methods of administration of analgesic drugs; side-effects of analgesic drugs and their nursing management. Non-pharmacological and alternative methods of pain treatment. Psychotherapeutic methods of pain treatment (coping, practising management strategies, etc.). The importance of pain in life (social component, lifestyle, family influence on the perception of pain, etc.). Basic rehabilitation and alternative methods in the treatment of pain.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the subject is to teach students the theoretical fundamentals and practical skills that will enable the safe management of pain in the hospital and home settings.
The student knows the different types of pain, evaluates and monitors pain well, and is able to actively use non-pharmacological methods of pain treatment. The student knows the indications and methods of application of pharmacological products to eliminate or alleviate pain. The student recognizes situations that require planned or immediate hospitalization of the patient.

Mandatory attendance of 70 per cent in lectures, 80 per cent in seminars Submitting an assigned seminar work (presentation of an issue + submitting a written form of the same) Passing oral exam.
