Course content
|
History, basic concepts and organizational forms of palliative care. Palliative care in EU health care system. End-of-life care. The most common symptoms and coping with them: pain, dyspnea, nausea and vomiting, confusion, fatigue, bleeding, disorders of defecation and urination, sleep disorders. Psychological needs, emotional support, nondirective approach, human individuality, truthfulness. Social needs: the importance of stable environment, support of family ties, specifics of home palliative care. Spiritual needs of dying patients from the nursing point of view: hope, love, forgiveness and reconciliation, religiosity. Accompanying family members, care for the bereaved. Specific aspects of care for terminally ill children. Importance of communication with the patient and the family. Coping with the most common symptoms in terminally ill patients. Meeting the psychological needs, emotional support of terminally ill patients and their families. Support of family ties, cooperation and communication with the dying patient's family. Meeting spiritual needs of patients. Nursing care plan and education plan in terminally ill and dying patients.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the subject is to acquaint students with guidelines for palliative nursing care and prepare them for the situations arising in care of terminally ill and dying patients.
Students know organizational forms of palliative care, symptoms of terminal stages of diseases and relevant nursing interventions. Students are able to plan, implement and evaluate nursing process in terminally ill and dying patients. Students are able to educate and help relatives in the care of the dying patient both in home environment and within the framework of a health care team. Students adhere to ethical norms, are able to use psychological and communication skills. Students are able to justify used procedures both in a discussion both with a professional and a layman.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral examination, Discussion
Completion of compulsory 80% attendance at the practicum sessions and seminars. Successful completion of an oral examination.
