Course content
|
Introduction to the psychology of religions. Basic representatives: The field of psychology of religions. Basic terms: The field of psychology of religions. William James as a philosopher as well as a psychologist and a religionist. The issue of evil in psychopathology of neurosis. The evil of neurosis and the evil of sin. Neurosis - a basic obstacle to a mental and spiritual development (Analytical concept of Karen Horney). Spiritual leadership and psychotherapy. Comparison of the concept of human growth according to Karen Horney and Jean Vanier. Psychotherapy, religion, and ethics. Moral principle of evolution - a comparison of conclusions of analytical psychology and religion. Affective disorders and their spiritual interpretation. Schizophrenia and mystics, determination of a border between a psychosis and expressions of a religious experience. Fanatism from the view of a former Jehovah 's Witness. Immature religiosity and its influence on the personality of the patient as well as the health care worker. Mature religiosity, impact of mature faith on the person in health as well as in illness. Existentialist psychotherapy of V. E. Frankl, questions concerning meaning of life, consciousness, and relatedness to religious faith.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to acquire a capacity for independent recognition in the ill and in oneself of the relationship between mental, physical, and spiritual health, to differentiate between the psychologist's, the psychiatrist's, and the clergy's competencies.
The student understands the relationship between psychotherapy and morals and recognizes expressions of a healthy and unhealthy religious faith. He/she gains a basic understanding of psychopathology with a religious content as well as of specific problems of the ill with a considerably immature religiosity and of the treatment principles.
