Course content
|
Psychosocial first aid: psychological, social, spiritual, and legal first aid. Communicating bad news. Crisis intervention: assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation. Negotiating with the patient or family members. Agreement mediation between the patient and family members, or if need be, the staff. Accompanying the surviving family members while they are coming to terms with death; escort during contact with the dead body. Types of team support for nurses while coming to terms with the demands of the profession (facilitation, debriefing, termination meetings, and team meetings over supervision cases).

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the subject is to equip students with basic skills for dealing with challenging situations in health care services, especially with regard to accompanying the dying and their families and with an emphasis on support options for the health care personnel, provided by the nurse in a leadership position.
The student will learn to recognize the indications for selected communication tools and to use them, at the basic level, in practice.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral examination
Completion of compulsory 80% attendance at the practicum sessions and seminars. Successful completion of an oral examination.
