Course content
Text coding, font formats, PostScript and PDF formats, PDF/X standards, print data file issues, preflight. Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress: setting up the interface, page layout (importing, editing and formatting of text as well as graphic elements, using of automatic page elements), exporting in output format. Adobe Acrobat Pro and Enfocus PitStop: checking and editing of PDF parameters, working with preflight tools.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide the skills to use common industry software and to give an overview over technical aspects of page design containing text and graphics and its output into suitable format for further prepress steps. Text coding, font formats and PostScript and PDF output formats are clarified, including PDF/X standards. With respect to the checking of print data files, various errors are summarized and preflight is explained.
On completion of this course, the student will be able to use Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress, Adobe Acrobat Pro and Enfocus PitStop, to layout the publication, produce required output files and check the important parameters that influence resulting quality.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of Introduction to graphic arts and printing technology, Prepress I and Typography courses. At least elementary English language skills and computer practice are recommended.

Home assignment evaluation, Student performance assessment

Assessment of the course is based on elaboration and presentation of the project that proves the ability to layout specified publication in both page layout applications, produce output files for given purposes and check if they are correct.
