Course content
Sociology as a scientific discipline. The subject, its development, and theoretical underpinnings. Traditional and modern society, the development of the modern society. Social stratification, position, status, social mobility. Institutionalization of actions, social roles. Organized actions, bureaucracy. Societal groups, crowd theory. Symbol communication. Normalcy and pathology in the society, conflict. Medical sociology, its foundation, development, the subject. Health from the sociological viewpoint. Illness from the sociological viewpoint. The patient's sociology. The nurse's role. The physician's role. The woman's role, gender.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide students with fundamental information from the field of sociology. Attention is focused on basic questions from general sociology and on selected issues from medical sociology.
The student will master basic knowledge of social relationships in the professional and the private life spheres, will demonstrate an ability to view, in a global way, societal phenomena and processes in relation to medicine and nursing, and will practically apply selected methods of sociological research.

Oral examination, Home assignment evaluation, Student performance assessment

Completion of compulsory 80% attendance at the practicum sessions and seminars. Successful completion of an oral examination. Completing assigned written work.
