Course content
Liver, gallbladder and bile duct surgery, pancreas surgery and spleen surgery. Surgery in diaphragmatic hiatus and abdominal oesophagus. Terminology and characteristics of basic types of surgical procedures and overview and characteristics of surgical approaches and techniques in thoracic surgery. Examination methods in thoracic surgery. Topographic anatomy and function of organs operated on in thoracic surgery. Pathophysiological conditions, their diagnosis and indications for surgical treatments in thoracic surgery. Operations in thoracic surgery: chest puncture and drainage, mediastinal surgery. Lung and tracheobronchial tree surgery. Oesophageal and oesophageal hiatus surgery. The most common minimally invasive operations in thoracic surgery. Perioperative care - specific aspects of individual surgical procedures in thoracic surgery. Medical equipment, specific instrumentarium, implants, drugs and other medical devices, material and aids.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the subject is to acquaint students with theoretical and practical issues of general and thoracic surgery, both in diagnostics and in particular treatments.
Students will master anatomy, topographical anatomy, pathophysiology, diagnostics, treatment and principles of perioperative care in general and thoracic surgery. Students will orientate themselves in surgical procedures in most frequent therapies in the field. Students will be aware of risks and crisis situations in general and thoracic surgery resulting from situations in operating rooms.

Assessment methods and criteria

Fulfilment of compulsory 60 % attendance in lectures. Fulfilment of compulsory 80 % attendance in seminars. Written assignment and passing oral exam.
