Course content
Introduction to social work. History, legislative and ethical framework, mission, values and principles. Psychodynamic, humanistic and existential theories in the context of social work. Social psychological and communication models in relation to social work. Social ecological approach. Anti oppressive approach. Postmodern approaches in social work. The concept of power/control and helping. Therapeutic and counselling approaches applied in social work. Introduction to social work with the individual. Introduction to social work with groups. Working with relevant documents - legislation, code of ethics and other IASW documents. Values and motivations for the profession. Examples of the application of selected approaches, theories and methods within social work. Practice of partial skills and techniques in working with individuals and groups. Working with information systems in social work. Practising professional social worker communication. Presentation of completed credit assignments/seminar papers.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is for students to gain a basic overview of the development of social work and its legitimacy, to adopt the values of social work and acquire the terminology of social work, to orient themselves in the main trends of thought influencing the development of social work and to know the theoretical models relevant to social work.
Students are familiar with individual methods of social work and their use in practice.

Specified compulsory attendance in seminars and lectures. Passing a written test or an oral exam, or other conditions, as decided by the course guarantor. Completing a credit assignment / seminar paper.
