Sociology as a scientific discipline and its significance for practice. The development of sociology, main sociological theories, and their representatives. Nature and society. Traditional, modern, and postmodern society. The diversity of cultures, religions, secularity, and change. The process of socialization, personality, generations, and the life cycle. Social stratification of the society, position, status, social mobility, social groups, crowds, and ethnic structure. Institutionalization of conduct, social position and social role, tender. The family as a specific social group and its development. Organized conduct in the society, bureaucracy, work, and education. Social interaction, communication, and mass communication. The normal and pathological phenomena in the society, values, the system of social control, and conflict. Health from a sociological perspective. Illness from a sociological perspective. Sociology of the patient. The role of the health care worker, and the health care worker-patient relationship. Social phenomena.

The aim of the subject is to acquaint students with the main sociological theories, categories, concepts, and processes to gain the tools for understanding fundamental and specific social processes and phenomena, to convey the latest sociological knowledge, to explain the connection between sociology and social work and to teach them to use sociological knowledge in their work.
The student will acquire basic knowledge of sociology and will demonstrate the ability to view, in a comprehensive way, phenomena and processes that take place in a specific real society, especially in relation to health care and social work. He or she is well versed in the sociological literature.

Home assignment evaluation, Didactic test
Completion of compulsory 60% attendance at the lectures. Completion of assigned written paper. Successful completion of an oral/written examination.
