Course content
Basic concepts in the issues of minorities and migrants. Migration in a historical and contemporary context. The status and rights of national and ethnic minorities, the legislative framework. Ethnic and national minorities on the territory of the Czech Republic - historical development, current status, demographic profile. Actors in the field of social work with minorities and migrants in the Czech Republic. Bases of social work with minorities and migrants. Basic dilemmas. The assumptions and competencies of a social worker in the field of minorities and migrants. Xenophobia, racial and ethnic prejudice, nationalism, chauvinism, egocentrism. Extremist movements in the Czech Republic. The specifics of multiculturalism, the criticism and the danger of it arising. Cultural and language barriers when working with foreigners and minorities. Asylum situation in the Czech Republic. Roma. Ukrainians. Vietnamese. Islam.

Learning outcomes
The aim is to acquaint students with the issues of minorities and migrants and the relevant concepts related to the topic. For example, the attention is paid to the coexistence of majorities with minorities, the issue of social exclusion, working with the concepts of prejudice, discrimination, racism, ethnocentrism, etc.
The student has the basic knowledge about the national minorities and ethnic groups living in the Czech Republic and he/ she knows some of the approaches and methods of social work with members of minorities.

Oral examination, Written examination

The fulfilment of compulsory attendance at lectures and seminars. Written test or oral exam fulfilment according to course guarantor decision.
