Course content
Introduction to the issue, definition of terms. Legislative framework of the issue, quality standards of social and legal protection of children. Social and legal protection of a child. Authorities of social-legal protection of children. National strategy for the protection of children's rights. Transformation of the system of care for children at risk. Alternative family care, adoption. The role of the state and the non-governmental non-profit sector. International legal protection of children. Probation of children and youth. Institutional care for children at risk. Activities of individual bodies of social and legal protection of children in practice - expert discussion. Representatives of the non-profit sector operating in the area - introduction to the activities of individual entities, professional discussion. Introduction of other subjects of the system - social services, health and education institutions. Interdisciplinary cooperation (Cochem model). Assessment of a child's situation. Individual child protection plan. Case studies - professional discussion.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the comprehensive system of care for children at risk in the Czech Republic. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the system as a whole and the role of individual state and non-state entities operating in this area (knowing their competences and activities).
Students are familiar with the current situation of transformation of this area, they are aware of the system of care for children at risk.

Assessment methods and criteria

The fulfilment of compulsory attendance at lectures and seminars. Preparation and presentation of a paper on a topic addressing a current problem in the field of care for a child at risk. Written test or oral exam fulfilment according to course guarantor decision.
