Course content

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam as three Abrahamic traditions. Christian and Islamic spirituality, theology, and ethics. Christian and Islamic view of the human being, politics, and history. The Islamic view of Jesus and the Bible. The Christian view of Muhammad and the Quran. Attitudes to Christians in the Quran and hadiths. Eastern Christians and the Islamic Caliphate. Muslim raids in the West. Christians and Muslims in Andalusia. Important scholars of the Muslim medieval world. How Muslim scholarship and knowledge found their way to the West. Attitudes of Western medieval Christians to Islam. The Reconquiste.

Learning outcomes
|
The objective of this course is to compare Islam and Christianity, to look at the relationships between the Christians and the Muslims in the Middle Ages, and to explain the place of Islam in the history of Medieval Europe and its influence on the formation of Western culture.
Student will be able to compare Christian and Muslim beliefs and will gain an understanding of the relationship between Christians and Muslims in the Middle Ages and of the formation of distorted image of Islam in the Western awareness. Student will learn about the most significant Muslim medieval scholars and about the general level and influence of Muslim science, education, culture.
