Course content
|
Religion in the contemporary American society: statistical perspective. Religious experiments during the colonial period: "City on the Hill" and "City of the Brotherly Love". The Great Awakening as a preparation for the American Revolution. The role of religion in the War of Independence. The Second Great Awakening and the American Civil War. The Golden Age and Protestantism. Protestant liberalism and fundamentalism. The map of denominations - overview and description of selected groups. A transition from a Protestant to the Judeo-Christian paradigm. American Catholicism. Judaism and American religious society. The theory of civil religion. Religion and state - the specific position of religions in the American legal system.

Learning outcomes
|
The objective of this course is to improve students´ understanding of the religious situation in the culturally plural societies.
Students will acquire an understanding of the basic historical, as well as social aspects of religion (and religions) in euro-american area. They will also be provided with basic informations about religious movements and organisations coming from the USA that have active missions outside the USA (including the Czech Republic).

The assignments require an understanding of the topics dealt with during the seminars and required literature including texts from the reader.
