Course content
Introductory session - who are Neopagans and what is Neopaganism? Judaism, idolatry and the early church, Christian theology and a creation of Paganism. The development of a concept of paganism during the centuries since Antiquity until the establishment of religious studies. Emergence of Neopaganism and its contemporary scholarly study - Pagan Studies. The historicity of Neopagan practices and beliefs - the case study of wicca. Neopaganism and New Age. Neopaganism in the Czech republic - history, roots, groups and organizations and changes within the neo-Pagan milieu. Sociology of neo-Pagan groups - neo-Paganism as a specific subculture, research in neo-Pagan groups. Institutionalization and Neopaganism. The influence of Christianity on Neopaganism.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to provide a basic overview of a historical and theoretical development of concept "paganism", reflection of its theoretical framework and application of this concept from Antiquity to the present. Students will be introduced into an academical study of neo-paganism, its research methods and into the theoretical problems of Pagan Studies. This course will be also focused on the issue of historicity of neopagan ideas and practices and the development of a czech neopagan milieu. Neo-paganism will be shown on general level in the widest perspective. This course is an methodological and theoretical introduction to course NPO2.
Students will obtain theoretical and particular information about the history and development of the "paganism" concept. They will be introduced into the contemporary scholarly study of Neopaganism and its research methods. They will have an overview of the contemporary Neopagan milieu in the Czech republic and worldwide.
