Course content
I. Grasping the phenomenon: *(traditional "paradigm", Kuroda and combinatory "paradigm", critical evaluation - theory of science) II. Developement of the conceptualization of Shinto in Western Guise *(missionaries of 16th cent., Kaempfer, Enlightenment, modern science of 19th and 20th centuries) III. Japanese traditions *(kami, shrines, rituals, concept of kegare, ...)

Learning outcomes
In this course, students will get the basic knowledge of Shintó within the context of Japanese culture, it?s development and interaction with other religious traditions.
Students will gain a general overview of Shintó as one of many streams under the surface of Japanese religious life. Subsequently, they will get the overall idea about a different approach the phenomena of religion within the context of a different culture.
