Course content
A critique of religion from inside and outside; secularization; atheism. The attempt to characterize a postmodern paradigm. The outline of contemporary streams of religiosity, according to sources; religiosity and spirituality. Prehistory of hermetism, Renaissance of hermetism. Hermetism of the Modern Age; magic; alchemy; astrology. Rosicrucianism from the discovery of RC literature till today; Freemasonry; Martinism; occult orders. Returns to the archaic religions; neo-shamanism. Return to the pre-Christian religions of the Celts, Germanic tribes, and Slavs. Hindus gorups in contemprary religiosity; Yoga; Bhakti; Neovedanta. Buddhist groups in contemporary religiosity. Religious extremism; violence and religion; anti-cult activities. The relationships between religions; models; post-dialogic relationships.

Learning outcomes
The objective of the second part of this course is to gain a global view of the contemporary state of religion and to introduce new, numerically small, alternative religious groups in present times; of their social and cultural context, and the reactions of major religions and secular society to their presence.
Students will gain an understanding of those contemporary religious streams that present an alternative in our country. Students should also improve their orientation in situations that are connected with contemporary religiosity, e.g. in media, consulting, and other similar work with alternative spiritual movements, religious minorities, and so on.

Assessment methods and criteria

The oral exam will contain the topics from SRE1 and SRE2. To the exam, students will bring annotations for at least four titles that they read (titles other than those read for SRE1 in the winter term) - this means at least 7,200 typed characters.
