The objective of this course is to introduce the various meanings of the term "tolerance" and to reflect upon the problem of tolerance in philosophy, in the Bible, and in Christian theology. This course will also look at tolerance/intolerance in clerical history, from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Students will be able to distinguish various understandings of "tolerance" and to define the content of this term. They will also better understand the problem of tolerance/intolerance in the Bible and in the history of Christianity, and the ways of thinking that, historically, either encouraged intolerance and fanaticism or else encouraged more open, tolerant views.
