Course content
|
Definition of the field of study, basic terminology. History of the Berbers essential for understanding the current situation - Berber ancestors, means of making a living, housing, religion, cultural influences, Christianity (St. Augustin), Arabic aggression, process of islamisation, charijism, arabisation, Hilal aggression, Almoravids, Amohadis. Three Berberic populations as three different models of resistance to the process of arabisation. Tuaregs, Kabyls, Mosabits, means of making a living, traditional social structure and its transformation. Pierre Bourdieu and his ethnological studies - traditional Kabyl house, feminine and masculine principles, values nif and hurma, the code of honour. Kinship and family, preference marriage, role of family members. Islam - beginnings, Prophet Muhammad, spreading of Islam, orthodox chalifs, schism, Koran, five pillars of religion, basic terminology: "living" Islam - P. Bourdieu, "folk" Islam - E. Gellner. Annual and family ceremonies. Clifford Geertz and his comparative study Islam Observed. Ernest Gellner and his study concerning the anthropology of Maghreb: Saints of the Atlas, Muslim Society. Studies concerning anthropology of Maghreb - overview and summary (Berque, Bourdieu, Sayad, Gellner, Geertz, Rabinow, etc.) Said's orientalism and its criticism (Lewis, Gellner). Different construction of national identities (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) - colonisation, independence, current situation. Berber emancipation movement: history and the present. Emigration from Maghreb - historical and geographical context, current problems.

Learning outcomes
|
The objective of the course is to introduce the students to the problematics of the present-day Maghreb. The course will present the basic specialised literature, which deals with the anthropology of northern Africa, its benefits and criticism (e.g. concept of the ethnographic present).
At the end of the course, students will be able to reflect on the current problems of Maghreb, place them in their historical context and explain them from the anthropological point of view.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written examination, Home assignment evaluation, Discussion
Knowledge of the lectured topics, reading at least two chosen books from the list of recommended literature. Type of assessment: written exam testing the knowledge of the lectured topics and specialised literature, or requiring reflection on given topic. Attendance at the lectures is required.
