Course content
European and American prerequisites of overseas discoveries. Overseas discoveries and conquista of the New World - the clash of two civilisations. Ethnology of the Caribbean. Ethnological portrait of so-called "high" cultures - Aztecs, Mayas, Incas. Mythology and religion. Art and culture (architecture, sculpture, painting, verbal art, etc). Social and economic relations. Vice-king epoch of the Latin America and beginnings of the current states in the 19th century. Indian question today (guerrila movements, Zapatist question, etc.)

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to offer the basic anthropological and ethno-historical facts with regard to the development of the Central and South America since the pre-Columbian times to the present day, with a special focus on so-called "high" civilisations (Aztecs, Mayas, Incas). Emphasis is also placed on political, economic, social and cultural consequences of the clash of two civilisations in the 15th and 16th century and on the Indian question today (guerrila movement, Zapatista uprising, etc.).
Students will be familiar with the anthropological definitions of the particular region and will be able to compare it with other world areas.
