Learning outcomes
During the course, students will learn about European policy towards national and ethnic minorities, different categories of national and ethnic minorities, the development of the minority issue in Europe and will gain a basic regional overview of ethnic and national minorities in Europe. The aim is to familiarize students with the variability and multifaceted nature of the concept of minority, its value and power content, and the various characteristics that can define a minority, with a different degree of demarcation and perception of identity. In the seminar, students will learn about a number of specific examples illustrating different categories, positions and identities of what we summarize under the concept of ethnic minorities, and their development over time.
The student will learn a critical approach to the use of the term ethnic minority and will gain a basic orientation in academic and political approaches to minorities in Europe. They will learn a perspective understanding, differences of the phenomenon according to the historical, local, social and other contexts, and will become familiar with its practical application.
