Course content
Ethnography in the works of ancient authors. Ethnography in historical sources from the Great Moravia period and from the beginnings of the Czech state. Ethnography during the reign of the last Přemyslides and Luxemburgians. Ethnography in literary and historical sources of the Hussite and post-Hussite period. Ethnography in Czech travel writing of 15th - 17th century. Humanistic ethnography - cosmographic, chronological and geographic works as a source of ethnographic knowledge. Ethnography in the works of the baroque authors (Balbín, Pešina z Čechorodu, Tannerové), beginnings of foreign Czech ethnography (missionary work of Jesuits of Czech province in the overseas). Ethnography of the national revival. Ethnography of the 1890´s (Čeněk Zíbrt, foundation of Český lid, Národopisná výstava Českoslovanská). Ethnography of the interwar period (Jiří Horák, Václav Tille, Jiří Polívka, Drahomíra Stránská, Karel Chotek, etc.). Basic features of development of ethnography, ethnology and social anthropology from 1945 to the present.

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to provide the students with a clearly structured overview of development of the history of Czech ethnography (ethnology) from the pre-historic beginnings in the Middle Ages and early Modern period to the present.
Students will not only be able to understand the process of development of ethnography (ethnology) as a science, but they will also acquire basic understanding of developmental context of ethnography, history, history of literature and art, etc. and that also in broader European and world context.

Active participation in lectures, study of the recommended literature. Type of assessment: assignment awarded for seminar paper, length 10-15 pages, including bibliography.
