Course content
Research specifications (problem situations, subject and object of the research, research aims). Basic research phases. Techniques of data collection and data analysis: observation techniques, experiment and its application in social sciences, techniques of documents study (content analysis and secondary analysis), questioning techniques (questionnaire production, kinds of questions, interview techniques, specifics of surveys). Sociometry. Research of development and change - problems of repeated research. Operationalisation, measuring, features. Validity and reliability, standardisation. Selective surveys (basic and selective file, methods of choosing the sample). Analysis and interpretation of empirical material - selection of the 1st grade (frequency, scale of location and variability), transformation of features; selection of the 2nd grade (principle of testing the hypothesis, quota tables, correlation, regression, principles of tables interpretation, statistic signification, reliability interval, level of importance, statistic importance test), techniques of multidimensional analysis (problems of causal interpretation, analysis of latent structures, factor analysis, cluster analysis, discrimination analysis). Final research report, presentation of the outcomes, problems of socio-technical recommendations.

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to introduce the students to individual methods and techniques of social research, with the emphasis on quantitative methods. Students will familiarise themselves with individual phases of research and possible interpretation, presentation and implementation of empirical data. Students will be able to use individual techniques of data collection and analysis in accordance with the research aims.

Exam consists of two parts: 1. student's portfolio - based on partial assignments throughout the course and submitted or reviewed on stated deadlines. 2. written test (on PC)
