Course content
Terms: living environment, home, homeland and migration processes, terminology of migration. Theory of migration processes, individual patterns and concepts. Migration as a historic and sociological phenomenon. Significance of migration in history, mainly from the 19th century to the present. Ethnic groups in new environment. Czech and Slovak migration to the European countries and to other continents - concrete examples.

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is: 1) general problems of migration processes (theories, patterns, concepts, classification); 2) particular facts and examples of migration. Special focus will be placed on Czech migration abroad, mainly to the USA as a part of migration waves of the 19th century.
Students will be introduced to basic terminology, patterns and concepts of migration as a historic and sociological phenomenon. The importance of migration in history, mainly from the 19th century to the present day will be mentioned. As a part of the phenomenon of ethnic groups in the new environment, basic information about Czech migration to the European countries as well as to other continents (mainly to the USA) will be covered. Current situation of the Czech communities will be mentioned.

Knowledge of the problems covered at the lectures (mainly based on: ŠATAVA, L. Migrační procesy a české vystěhovalectví 19. století do USA, Praha 1989: FF UK). Compulsory literature: Compilation Češi v cizině 9 and 1 other book from the list of required literature (total of three books) Knowledge of this literature is a prerequisite for the exam!
