Course content
Interpretation of Flaherty, current reflection of the first ethnographic films. Role of an anthropologist behind the camera - objectivity and subjectivity. Timothy Asch and Napoleon Chagnon. Margaret Mead, Gregory Bateson - attempt at interpretation of data for supporting the psychological theories of culture. Anthropologist and ethics - war. Robert Gardner. "Cinema Verité" and ethno-fiction, French films by Jean Rouche. Symbolism. "Sensitive Camera" - David and Judith MacDougall. Ironic concept - documentaries on the social taboos - Mira Nair. Post-colonial concept, ethno-tourism - Dennis O'Rourke, Marloon Fuentes. Autobiographical concept - Lynne Littman, Barbara Myerhoff. Current documentaries about opinions of the researched ethnics on films, in which they feature. Film makers and documentarists in North America. SUNDANCE film festival (role of Robert Redford). APTN, National Board of Canada. Alanis Obomsawin - Kahnesatake, Listuguj, Rocks at Whiskey Trench, etc. Chris Eyre (Smoke signals, Red Skins, etc), Randy Redroad (Doe), Shirley Cheechoo (Bearwalker), etc. Film and media of original inhabitants of Australia. Visit of film festival.

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is an analysis and interpretation of visual presentation of different cultures and cultural phenomena in ethnographic films. Ethnographic film is a part of the subject of anthropological study, film science and documentaries. Films in the context of anthropology will be presented. The aim of the course is to interpret films by anthropologists and film makers such as: Flaherty, Mead, Bateson, Asch, Gardner, Rouche, David and Judith MacDougall, Dennis O'Rourke, etc. and films by original inhabitants of North America, Australia, etc. Working knowledge of English is needed.
Students will be able to interpret ethnographic films and work of anthropologists and film makers such as: Flaherty, Mead, Bateson, Asch, Gardner, Rouche, David and Judith MacDougall, Dennis O'Rourke, etc. and films by original inhabitants of North America, Australia, etc. Working knowledge of English is needed.
Prerequisites
The course presupposes the knowledge acquired in the course TESAN. Knowledge of the English is needed.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination, Home assignment evaluation

Max 3 absences. Watching and analysis of the films (attendance is necessary). Written work based on compulsory literature (range 8-10 pages), deadline for choosing the topic - week 8. Active participation - discussion based on compulsory literature and films. All the articles are available in the copy centre and at the library. P-compulsory, D-recommended.
